Ryecroft Hall

Ryecroft Hall was built in the mid 1800’s on land bought off the Earl of Stamford and Warrington by James Smith Buckley, a wealthy cotton mill owner who lavished himself in luxuries and style, a design seen throughout Ryecroft Hall. The hall boasts many rooms including library, ballroom, billiard room, servant’s quarters amongst others. Ryecroft Hall was passed through Buckley’s family after his death, and many of his kin lived their lives in the home Buckley himself built. In the First World War, the hall was used as a Red Cross hospital, taking in the injured soldiers in their time of need. Ryecroft Hall was given to Audenshaw once the war was over to be used as a base for administration.

The hauntings of Ryecroft Hall are well known amongst the locals and the staff. The cellar, which was once a morgue during the halls time as a hospital, is now a cause of fear with the men and women who work and visit the hall, with many seeing figures of the dead still walking from room to room. The presence of an angry female who many believe to be a nurse from the 1st world war is intent on doing her best to keep visitors away. Banging and footsteps are often heard and people are touched and pushed in her attempts to frighten strangers away, why is she so protective does she have a secret to guard? In other parts of the building particularly in the upstairs corridors children can be heard laughing and playing and the spirit of a little girl in Victorian style clothing has been seen by individuals visiting the hall. An oppressive atmosphere surrounds Ryecroft hall, producing some impressive paranormal activity.
